The Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basque Country<\/strong>, Artium Museoa, presents the exhibition ‘Persona, foto, copia’<\/strong> <\/em>by Julia Sp\u00ednola (until 10 December<\/strong> 2023). The exhibition brings together newly produced works together with works that Sp\u00ednola has produced over the last decade.<\/p>\r\n

\"12-JULIA-SPINOLA-Quintas-Fo\"<\/p>\r\n

Julia Sp\u00ednola<\/strong> (Madrid, 1979) presents in this exhibition existing works that enter into dialogue with new works produced especially for this occasion. In the latter, Sp\u00ednola ‘copies’ herself<\/strong> and other artists to explore the possibilities of pleasure derived from the repetition of different sculptural forms, the textures that cover the surfaces and the relationships that these volumes generate when placed in the museum space.<\/p>\r\n

Among Sp\u00ednola’s already well-known pieces are ‘Uno zurdo y uno diestro, y uno zurdo y uno diestro cajas’<\/strong><\/em> (2014), belonging to the Museo Reina Sof\u00eda collection, Vis (I) and Vis (II) (2020), Frase (object). MOUTH (2013-2018) and Philip (2023). Among those made for this exhibition, the artist presents S\u00edlex 1, C\u00e1ntaro<\/strong><\/em>, F<\/em>, Watana I<\/em> and Watana II<\/em>, all produced in 2023. Also presented is the series of screenprints Rojamente<\/strong> <\/em>(2020-2023).<\/p>\r\n

As in previous presentations by the artist, light is a working material with which Sp\u00ednola constructs different ways of approaching her work. In the Artium Museoa exhibition, the artist has dispensed with electric lighting, so that the space has only the “natural” light<\/strong> that enters through the oculi that connect the room with the museum’s internal plaza.<\/p>\r\n

The importance of generating subtle encounters between his pieces<\/strong> within a specific space situates the spectator in the experience of attending an event that is never fully consummated, in which he relates to unsettling materialities. Appealing to the potential of different ranges of visibility, the exhibition is transformed according to the changing lighting<\/strong> conditions of the exhibition rooms throughout the day, but also during the months in which it occupies the museum space.<\/p>\r\n
