The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao<\/strong> opens its doors to the innovation, creativity and freedom<\/strong> that have always characterised Yayoi Kusama in a retrospective that covers iconic themes for the Japanese artist, such as nature and the energy of life.<\/p>\r\n

The career of this singular artist, one of the most recognised and sought-after in the world, runs parallel to the upheaval caused in the 20th century<\/strong> by war, political, economic and social transformations<\/strong> and a constantly changing art scene.<\/p>\r\n

A global cultural icon<\/strong>, over the past seven decades Kusama has devoted herself to her avant-garde vision with conviction, perfecting her personal aesthetic<\/strong>, which is a faithful reflection of her philosophy of life.<\/p>\r\n

From the first drawings she made as a teenager during the Second World War<\/strong> to her most recent immersive works, this retrospective brings together a selection of two hundred paintings, sculptures, performances, moving images, large-scale<\/strong> installations and archival material.<\/p>\r\n

Her creative force<\/strong>, initially restrained by the conservatism of Japanese society at the time, found in the New York<\/strong> of the late 1950s the perfect setting to unleash her talent. In the following decades, Kusama combined that same passion with pioneering incursions into new artistic practices – such as performance, assemblage or installation art – with which she moved through Pop, Minimalism and Post-Minimalism<\/strong>. A risky bet at the time, but nowadays a point of reference<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n
