Since then, the islet with the hermitage has also been known as <strong>Rocadragon<\/strong>, <strong>Daenerys Targaryen&#8217;s<\/strong> fortress in the series.<\/p>\r\n<p>The iconic <strong>241 zigzagging<\/strong> stairs that must be climbed to reach the hermitage of <strong>San Juan Bautista<\/strong> are sure to leave you breathless, but the effort is always worth it. According to legend, when San Juan arrived in <strong>Bermeo<\/strong> he took three big steps before reaching the hermitage. The third of them was at the last step of access, where <strong>his footprint<\/strong> is marked. It is good luck to touch it, so don&#8217;t forget to do so.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"01354_11123\" src=\"https:\/\/basquemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/01354_11123.jpg\" alt=\"San Juan de Gaztelugatxe \" width=\"970\" height=\"507\" \/> San Juan de Gaztelugatxe<\/p>\r\n<p>The interior of the <strong>chapel<\/strong> will not leave you indifferent either. Its <strong>seafaring atmosphere<\/strong> is felt in every corner: you can find votive offerings of <strong>sailors saved from the sea<\/strong>, models of ships as offerings and paintings depicting boats <strong>about to be shipwrecked<\/strong>. So it is not difficult to suppose that Gaztelugatxe is deeply rooted among fishermen. Even today, when <strong>fishing boats<\/strong> from <strong>Bermeo<\/strong> go out to sea to fish for a long season, they usually make several <strong>turns to por<\/strong>t and <strong>starboard<\/strong> so that the saint will give them good luck.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Visit to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe<\/h2>\r\n<p>The visit to the islet can be done in different ways. The most traditional visit is <strong>on foot<\/strong>. The access by car or bus is not allowed in the last stretch, so the descent to the stairs that form the access bridge to the hermitage must be done on foot.<\/p>\r\n<p>There are <strong>two routes<\/strong> to reach San Juan de Gaztelugatxe on foot. The first, shorter, but with a steep slope, starts at <strong>Eneperi<\/strong> and descends the hill along a path that combines dirt and asphalt. The second option, <strong>somewhat longer<\/strong>, leads all the way down an asphalt road with no vehicle traffic and has a viewpoint from where you can appreciate the entire landscape. Neither of the two options is excessively demanding. <strong>Take it easy<\/strong>, every effort has its reward. Of course, don&#8217;t forget to reserve your <strong>free entrance<\/strong> during high season, long weekends and holidays!<\/p>\r\n<p>Alternatively, if you prefer to visit the area of <strong>San Juan Gaztelugatxe<\/strong> in a more special way, <strong>boat trips<\/strong> are also available. Departing from the port of <strong>Bermeo<\/strong>, these sea tours will also give you the option to visit Bermeo, the <strong>Matxitxako<\/strong> cape with its lighthouse and the <strong>Akatz rock<\/strong> in all its splendor.
