Ignatian Land, 2022 Jubilee Year of the Way

This year marks the V Centenary of the pilgrimage that took Ignatius of Loyola from his birthplace to Manresa, on his way to Jerusalem, establishing the Ignatian Way. Pope Francis reminds us of this event by proclaiming it a Jubilee Year of the Ignatian Way.

The Jubilee Year of the Ignatian Way offers us an excellent opportunity to follow it and get to know the places that enrich it. And at its starting point, Tierra Ignaciana, made up of the region of Urola Erdia and the neighbouring regions of Urola Garaia and Debagoiena, in the interior of the province of Gipuzkoa, an important destination for cultural and religious tourism, based on the figure of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
An enormous historical, artistic, cultural and religious heritage from the 16th century, the Basque Golden Age, awaits us here. The Route of the Three Temples is the backbone of Tierra Ignaciana, a 45 km itinerary linking the Sanctuary of Loyola with the Hermitage of La Antigua and the latter with the Sanctuary of Aránzazu. Apart from its artistic wealth and its spiritual and religious significance, this route recreates the first two stages of the pilgrimage made by Ignatius of Loyola 500 years ago.

Jubilee year
The Jubilee Year will bring novelties designed by tourist managers, who invite us to immerse ourselves in the figure of Saint Ignatius and in the modus vivendi of the 16th century through different routes, media and supports.
Undoubtedly, the best way not to miss any detail of the richness of the Ignatian Land is to let yourself be guided by the numerous professional guides specialised in heritage, history and nature, dedicated to offering tailor-made tours and personalised visits. They will also be in charge of introducing us to the various proposals programmed by the destination's tourism managers, whose work has been recognised by the European Commission: in 2017 Tierra Ignaciana was awarded the EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) prize for sustainability and excellence in the management of cultural tourism destinations.
