The curator Alejandro Castellote has constructed his exhibition discourse on the basis of the work of 8 artists from different parts of Asia, with works that are very different in substance and form, which allow us to approach a really interesting starting thesis. Until 19 February at Kutxa Kultur Artegunea (Tabakalera).
As the title of the exhibition (The Texture of Promises) states, photographs make us "promises", but we must investigate and dive into the works to unravel their true meaning. The easy identification of what is represented in them, their veracity and fidelity to reality must be questioned.
As a rule, when we see a photograph we trust in the transparency of its meaning, we believe that its eloquence can surpass verbal language and we expect all this to be available to us in the first visible layer of the photograph, in its visual "texture".
If we recognise what a photograph represents, but we do not know the author's intention, then our imagination is activated, we speculate about what it might mean, and we do so by drawing on our own experiences, on the emotions aroused by that first perception.
However, this process is complicated when the signs contained in the photographs are not culturally contiguous. This is the case with the traditional signs and patterns of representation used in some Asian countries. Cultural references are fundamental to understanding an image. Knowing from where the photograph is taken and from where we look at what is photographed.
