The retrospective "The Artwork As a Living System" shows the work of the artist duo Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau, pioneers of "Interface Art". The project connects art and nature with the most innovative techniques used in virtual, sensitive and interactive projects. From 7 February to 26 May 2024.
Sommerer and Mignonneau present a specific exhibition project for the Azkuna Zentroa Exhibition Hall that reflects the central aspect of their work: works of art act as living systems because life cannot be understood as a single entity but as a plurality of perspectives.
The exhibition consists of 18 works. Most of them are interactive installations, in which people touch and experience the artworks, exploring and interacting with the natural environments and being part of their simultaneous transformation in digital space. They are almost classics of digital art, winning awards at the world's leading digital art, science and culture festivals, and many of them have been shown in over 250 exhibitions.
These are multimedia works of art, based on scientific findings that open up the possibility of exploring the growth of plants or the behaviour of small computer-generated creatures, such as flies and beetles, and their integration into complex ecosystems. Installations that simulate living systems in which touching plants, typing on a typewriter or moving in front of a screen generates transformations in digital space.
