The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has awarded Morella (Castellón) and Lekunberri (Navarra) with the Best Tourism Villages seal, which recognises villages that are outstanding examples of rural tourism for preserving local culture and traditions and protecting biodiversity. /Information from mincotur.gob.es.

"Rural tourism is a good antidote to depopulation, because it is capable of generating activity throughout the year and having an impact on other economic sectors such as agri-food and crafts, promoting local consumption and enhancing the prestige of local products. Spain welcomes this UNWTO initiative, which will help to put our rural destinations on the map", said Fernando Valdés, Secretary of State for Tourism.

Gorka Azpiroz, Mayor of Lekunberri, celebrated the "recognition that this distinction represents for the work done in recent years by the town council of Lekunberri and which will strengthen the positioning of Navarre in international tourism".

The initiative aims to maximise the sector's contribution to reducing regional inequalities and combating depopulation of rural areas. It also aims to promote the role of tourism in the appreciation and preservation of rural villages and their landscapes, knowledge systems, biological and cultural diversity, as well as local values and activities, including gastronomy.
