On the 50th anniversary of Cristóbal Balenciaga's death, which is being commemorated this year, the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum explores a new perspective on his work, never before explored, and focusing on what makes "a Balenciaga" recognisable.
The exhibition 'Balenciaga. Character' shows everything from the comic silhouettes of the late 1930s to the more abstract shapes of the 1960s, as well as the iconic lines of the 1950s. The shapes and volumes created by Cristóbal Balenciaga are his main hallmarks.
However, alongside what can be seen on the outside, there is an inner world that supports it and gives it character. Labels, petticoats, bodices, pads, weights, linings, hems, buttons and pockets form part of the invisible side of the garments, secrets that this exhibition reveals along with Balenciaga's characteristic and appreciable exterior forms.
The exhibition displays 90 pieces spread over five rooms in which to appreciate silhouettes, volumes, fabrics and embroidery, and to discover that inner world, often hidden, that the cut, technique and finishes of haute couture make possible.
Temporary exhibition
The photographic exhibition 'Tom Kublin for Balenciaga. An unusual collaboration' highlights the significance of the collaboration between the photographer Tom Kublin and Cristóbal Balenciaga, both for documentary and artistic purposes, and the importance of his photographic and filmic work in shaping the image of the Balenciaga brand.
The exhibition brings together, for the first time, a wide and representative selection, with more than 100 photographs and 5 film extracts, of the work carried out by the Hungarian photographer for Cristóbal Balenciaga during more than two decades of collaboration.
