New women’s pelota tournament unveiled

The City Councils of Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Donostia, as well as the Basque Government are promoting a new women's pelota tournament: 3 Hiriburuak, in which 60 pelotaris (federated and non-federated) will take part. The semi-finals will be played in Bilbao on 9 October. Before that, the quarter-finals will be played in Vitoria-Gasteiz on 2 October and the final will take place in Donostia on 16 October.

This new championship will be an open tournament in which anyone can register, whether or not they are federated pelotari. Participation has been one of the main secrets of the success of this initiative and in this new 3 Hiriburuak championship 60 pelotaris will participate in 4 categories. With goxua pelota, they will be divided into youth and senior categories, while with mixed pelota, they will be divided into youth and elite.

Among the latter, the best specialists of the moment will be taking part. Among them will be Amaia Aldai -current individual champion of four and a half, Olatz Arrizabalaga - forward with five txapelas in the Emakume Master Cup circuit, Leire Garai -twice champion of the Emakume Master Cup Pairs- or Enara Gaminde -current champion of the Pairs-. In total, seven pairs will compete in this elite category; Arrizabalaga-Capellan, Arraiza-Gaminde, Barrokal-Bergara, Aldai-Mendizabal, Beitia-Zabala eta Etxegarai-Oses.

The Minister of Culture and Linguistic Policy and spokesperson of the Basque Government, Bingen Zupiria, participated today in the presentation of the Women's Pelota 3 Hiriburuak Championship together with the Councillor for Youth and Sports of the Bilbao City Council, Itxaso Erroteta, the Councillor for Sports of the San Sebastian City Council, Martin Ibabe, and the Councillor for Equality of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Miren Fernández de Landa. The presentation, which took place in the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, was also attended by some of the pelotaris who will be playing in the tournament.
