More about:

Itziar Ituño confesses to be a faithful lover of the area. For the actress and singer basauritarra, mainly known for playing the inspector Raquel in the series La casa de papel, Gaztelugatxe is an unforgettable place, incomparable to any other place I've been.

And no wonder. Already in 2016 its magic became clear when the internationally famous series Game of Thrones decided to include the enclave among its exclusive filming locations. Since then, the islet with the hermitage has also been known as Rocadragon, Daenerys Targaryen's fortress in the series.

The iconic 241 zigzagging stairs that must be climbed to reach the hermitage of San Juan Bautista are sure to leave you breathless, but the effort is always worth it. According to legend, when San Juan arrived in Bermeo he took three big steps before reaching the hermitage. The third of them was at the last step of access, where his footprint is marked. It is good luck to touch it, so don't forget to do so.

The interior of the chapel will not leave you indifferent either. Its seafaring atmosphere is felt in every corner: you can find votive offerings of sailors saved from the sea, models of ships as offerings and paintings depicting boats about to be shipwrecked. So it is not difficult to suppose that Gaztelugatxe is deeply rooted among fishermen. Even today, when fishing boats from Bermeo go out to sea to fish for a long season, they usually make several turns to port and starboard so that the saint will give them good luck.

Visit to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

The visit to the islet can be done in different ways. The most traditional visit is on foot. The access by car or bus is not allowed in the last stretch, so the descent to the stairs that form the access bridge to the hermitage must be done on foot.

There are two routes to reach San Juan de Gaztelugatxe on foot. The first, shorter, but with a steep slope, starts at Eneperi and descends the hill along a path that combines dirt and asphalt. The second option, somewhat longer, leads all the way down an asphalt road with no vehicle traffic and has a viewpoint from where you can appreciate the entire landscape. Neither of the two options is excessively demanding. Take it easy, every effort has its reward. Of course, don't forget to reserve your free entrance during high season, long weekends and holidays!

Alternatively, if you prefer to visit the area of San Juan Gaztelugatxe in a more special way, boat trips are also available. Departing from the port of Bermeo, these sea tours will also give you the option to visit Bermeo, the Matxitxako cape with its lighthouse and the Akatz rock in all its splendor. Afterwards, you can complement the view with a stroll through Bakio or Mundaka.

If you feel like doing any of the experiences that Itziar has done, go to Reserva Bilbao Bizkaia and take a look at her routes through Bizkaia!
