Ainhoa, on the road to Santiago

A former commercial enclave created to welcome pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela - it was created in the first half of the 13th century by monks of the Premonstratensian order - Ainhoa is characterized by the originality of its architecture, the beauty and tranquility of its natural environment and its gastronomic reputation.

This small town of practically one large street, with 700 inhabitants, is located between the Nive valley and the Navarre border, combining the green of its hills with the white and red facades of its old houses. Its large mansions still conserve their large porches, mule rings, stables and, on the second floor, a large living room. Unforgettable!

Sara and the Rhune train

A pearl! Surrounded by mountains, Sare is ranked among the most beautiful villages in France. With its 36 kilometers of border, this border village also borders with Navarre. Smuggling territory. Spadrille, animals, ball bearings or lace, many inhabitants of Sare passed goods from one side of the border to the other for years. The built heritage of Sare testifies to the great wealth obtained from whale and cod fishing. Sare is also the home of famous Basque authors: Axular, leader of classical Labourdin literature in the 17th century, J.B. Elissamburu, Basque poet and writer, J.M. Barandiaran, anthropologist.

Sare is known for its book fair, the Biltzar of Basque writers. Take the time to discover, from the top of the Rhune, the exceptional panorama stretching from the Basque coast to the Pyrenees chain. You can go up by cog railway or hiking. The caves of Sare are the occasion for a journey in the footsteps of our ancestors.
