The Councillor highlighted that the tourism data for August has exceeded forecasts as the levels "of arrivals, overnight stays and average rates for August 2019" have increased.

The Regional Minister of Tourism, Trade and Consumer Affairs has taken stock of tourism in summer after the EUSTAT data were published. On International Tourism Day, the Minister took the opportunity to recall "its importance, not only from an economic point of view, but also from a cultural and social cohesion point of view. In the Basque Country, tourism accounts for 6.4% of GDP, more than 100,000 people work in the tourism sector, but many more families depend on it".

"After knowing the tourism figures for August", continued the Minister, "we can affirm that the summer in the Basque Country has exceeded the tourism forecasts. We are counting on higher figures than in August 2019 in terms of arrivals, overnight stays and average rates".

"The Department of Tourism, Trade and Consumer Affairs is committed to sustainable, quality tourism. We do not want to base ourselves on figures or on the quantitative increase in tourism, but rather to orient the tourism model towards sustainable and sustained growth, deseasonalisation, the distribution of flows throughout the territory and an increase in the length of stay. However, we must admit that, after the fall in the inflow of tourists suffered due to the pandemic, to be able to talk about a recovery to 2019 levels is very good news for a sector that has suffered a lot during this crisis", concluded the Minister.
