The Mayor of Bilbao inaugurates the Vidarte gardens

The Mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, has inaugurated the Juan Mª Vidarte Garden, in memory of the former Dean of the Bar Association of Bizkaia, senator in the first legislature of the Senate and legal expert who participated in the drafting of the Statute of Autonomy of Gernika.
The space that has been given its name is located next to Rampas Uribitarte, near the Bizkaia Bar Association. It was the Professional Association that proposed that this garden area, which until now had no name, should be renamed the Juan Mª Vidarte Garden. The new nomenclature has no effect on the surrounding doorways or shops.
At the inauguration ceremony, the Mayor of Bilbao was accompanied by the Councillor for Citizen and International Attention and Participation, Oihane Agirregoitia, representatives of the Municipal Corporation and the Bizkaia Bar Association. Also in attendance were family and friends of Juan Mª Vidarte, including his son, the Director of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Juan Ignacio Vidarte.

Juan Mari Aburto referred to Vidarte's professional career, "his knowledge and experience made him a benchmark and role model in the field of law, in addition to his contribution as Dean and Basque Senator, he played an important role as a jurist and architect of a historic event; the drafting of the Statute of Gernika", but the Mayor also wished to highlight "the values that always accompanied him, Vidarte will always be remembered for his human qualities, for his commitment to the defence of justice, ethics and human rights".
Finally, Aburto stressed that "becoming part of our street names means that the history and legacy of Juan Mª Vidarte will endure over time and will be more present in the lives of the people of Bilbao".
