The Pasaia Itsas Festibala 2022

PASAIA-ITSAS-FESTIBALA

From 26th to 29th May, the bay of Pasaia, Gipuzkoa, will look like a scene from "Pirates of the Caribbean", during the Pasaia Itsas Festibala, the most important international maritime cultural event on the Basque Coast.  The aim is to promote and disseminate our maritime heritage, an extraordinary legacy that is becoming one of the strategic commitments of Pasaia and Gipuzkoa.

As a result of the global pandemic of COVID19, Pasaia Itsas Festibala 2020 has become Pasaia Itsas Festibala 2022. The 2018 edition flooded the Bay of Pasaia with maritime culture. Hundreds of traditional boats of heritage value sailed the waters and their sails occupied Pasaia; simultaneously music, gastronomy, crafts, workshops and informative events were held on land. For 4 days Pasaia changed its rhythm, its colour and even its aroma to pay tribute to the sea and its people, thus vindicating its place as a great maritime enclave.

Pasaia, the best natural port

For centuries, Pasaia was considered the best natural harbour in the Bay of Biscay. The largest whaling expeditions set sail from Pasaia for Newfoundland (Terranova) and the most impressive galleons were built here. In its sheltered waters, a shipbuilding industry developed, based on fishing, trade and shipbuilding. Proof of this is, among others, the establishment in Pasaia of the Royal Guipuzcoan Company of Caracas and the Royal Company of the Philippines.

Today, Pasaia continues to live looking out to sea. Its port of commerce, fishing, shipyards, rowing regatas and maritime heritage offer the world a place that is as unique as it is attractive, where competitive rowing boats defend the local colours, as always, at the highest level.

And on the ground

In parallel to the maritime activity, there is an intense, unique and high quality cultural programme. International experts from different disciplines lead an international conference, workshops are led by professionals, local products are presented, there is international and local music, dance and theatre, boats can be visited, traditional markets... The festival also encourages the creation of synergies between agents and promotes new ideas in cultural, environmental and solidarity terms. The Pasaia Itsas Festibala, which has an impact on the whole territory, transforms Pasaia into a hive of activity, a dynamic place open to the world.
