Matarranz, the home tailor, now in Donostia

The iconic brand has opened its first shop outside Madrid, and it does so in a spectacular space. Designed by the prestigious architect Pablo Paniagua, the shop combines classic elegance with unique elements, such as a small collection of Scandinavian and Italian furniture from the 50s and 60s. We interviewed Miguel Matarranz, current director and manager of the company.

What motivated you to open a shop in San Sebastian?
What we ask ourselves is ‘why didn't we choose it before’, we could say, it has always been in the company's plans. San Sebastian for us is a symbol, an institution, it is a city with a very high level, a level of taste, one of the most beautiful cities in Spain - if not the most.
Basque society, the society of the north, is a society closely linked to the culture of the home, a very inward-looking culture, you really like to enjoy your home, to enjoy what goes on in your home. We sell a product to enjoy the home. Our relationship with San Sebastian is something that had to happen.
What makes your shops special and distinctive?
What the customer will find here is ‘truth’, truth in the product, truth in the way. The real sale of Matarranz happens when the customer tries the product at home. When you go to take that shower or change the sheets, that's when you realise and say ‘this is different’. It's another way of understanding the home.
The home is a container of experiences, it is our refuge, where we feel safer. We also spread awareness and knowledge, the customer doesn't just come to buy, they come to learn, to understand... and then they decide whether to buy or not, but with awareness. At Matarranz, regardless of whether you buy or not, things always happen, it is a new kind of experience.

Any ‘symbolic’ Matarranz products?
Over the years I believe that the great value we have always had with our product has always been made-to-measure linen. That is why we distinguish ourselves and position ourselves as unique in the world as a home tailor, a term we have developed ourselves. This means that the customer has total choice behind our wide range of products, all based on quality.
What does it mean to you that the company bears your surname?
It is a legacy and a source of pride. Matarranz is not just me, it is also all those who have gone before me. And not just the legacy of my family, but of all the people who have been part of it over the years. The people who have been in the workshop, in sales, in administration... we would not be who we are without them. Matarranz is family.
