Festivities of the Virgen Blanca

This summer the capital of the Basque Country is once again celebrating culture, sport and its festivities with more enthusiasm than ever. Locals and visitors alike enjoy the joy and atmosphere of its streets, in the numerous and varied events that are organised during this summer period. Join the celebrations!

International Jazz Festival

During the month of July, jazz music takes centre stage in the life of the city, becoming one of the must-see events of the summer. A mixture of renowned groups and soloists and young talents has become the hallmark of the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival. This year's edition will feature, among others, great artists of the stature of Eliane Elías, Snarky Puppy, Robert Glasper, Arturo Sandoval and Kase.O.

Dates: 13 - 17 July.

Festivities of the Virgen Blanca

The 4th of August marks the start of the festival par excellence of Vitoria-Gasteiz with the traditional "chupinazo" that at 18:00h on the dot announces the beginning of the festivities in honour of the Virgen Blanca, the patron saint of the city. At that time, Celedón descends from the bell tower of San Miguel (in the form of a puppet) to a balcony in the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca (where the character comes to life) in front of thousands of people.

On 9 August, the main events end and at one o'clock in the morning on 10 August, Celedón bids farewell to the city, climbing back up the tower of the San Miguel bell tower amidst fireworks.

The Almond Route

Another essential for these holidays: a walk full of history through the Medieval Quarter, discovering civil buildings, palaces, tower houses, and beautiful temples of undoubted interest of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque or Neoclassical art.

The routes along the Almond Route include, among others, visits to the Cathedral of Santa María and the Plaza del Machete, without forgetting the city walls. Precisely, the old defensive system of the city will soon recover an added attraction: a viewpoint in one of its towers, which will allow the recovery of the watchtower function of this tower and its views of the urban area to the south of Vitoria-Gasteiz, with the Mountains of the city in the background.
