“Behind receiving a Goya, there is a lot of work”
Biscayan audiovisual producer, Iván Miñambres has received several Goya awards during his career: Best Animated Short Film -'Decorado', 'Loop'- and Best Animated Film -'Unicorn Wars'-. We talk about his career and future projects in this exclusive interview.
How did you get started in the audiovisual world?
When I finished high school, I studied Image and Sound and then I started working for a production company that was dedicated to advertising. At the age of 25, we started UniKo, the production company that I have today, and we began making audiovisual services for the Internet. We started working little by little, until we made our first short film. Until today there have been many changes, there has been an opening towards the consumption of animation that is not strictly familiar... Even so, it is still difficult to get projects off the ground and to distribute them.
What made you want to go into production and editing?
I loved comics, but I never had animation as a reference of something to dedicate myself to. I've been editing videos since I was 15, when my parents bought me my first computer. Editing was my passion and it still is today. Animation came about because of that personal hobby of comics, and we're still doing it because above all we like the process and the way it's done. But you could say it was almost circumstantial.
You have won several Goyas in your career, what is it like to receive such an important award?
I always say that the Goyas are like the icing on the cake, but behind that day there is a lot of work. It is recognition from the Film Academy for all the work you have done, which is very gratifying. Personally, I'm very happy to have been able to get it. We didn't expect it.
Has receiving these awards changed your work in any way?
It doesn't particularly change it. Yes, in terms of services you have to give more explanations, but on the other hand, perhaps it does help to guarantee that we are capable of doing things well, that they are recognised. But no, it doesn't change much. The day after the Goya Awards, at 9am we were already in the office.
What can you tell us about future projects?
We have a lot going on at the moment. We are awaiting the Cartoon Movie event, where we are presenting 'Decorado'; and several other projects. We are premiering two plays this year and we are also developing a series. It is the first project we are doing for family audiences in 3D (Pre-school). And more projects that I can't talk about yet, because they are very long-term projects (4-5 years). I'm really busy.
You are from Portugalete, Bizkaia, which corner of the province would you recommend?
On a terrace in the Plaza del Solar. A stone's throw from the Hanging Bridge and the Canilla. And with a zurito in hand, all the better.
