100 years of sustainability

In 2021 Barbour celebrates 100 years of sustainability. 100 years of waxing their jackets with a service that continues to this day.

Today, one hundred years on, re-waxing has become more important than ever as more and more customers look to make sustainable choices. Extending the life of a waxed jacket is one of the most effective ways to minimise its impact on the environment. If a Barbour jacket is re-waxed at least once a year with regular wear, it can last a long, long time and be part of several generations of the same family.

Barbour encourages this maintenance, through its official workshop, where it offers you the opportunity to extend the life of your jacket by cleaning, re-waxing and repairing it to make it as good as new, or teaches you how to re-wax it at home. The 6 oz. wax is lightweight and very easy to apply. The original Barbour wax is derived from a rich blend of natural ingredients, leaving the fabric moisturised and closer to its original colour and finish.

Barbour wax for live

Waxed cotton has been part of Barbour's history since its beginnings in 1894. When John Barbour founded J. Barbour & Sons in the port town of South Shields in the North East of England. One of his best sellers was Beacon, a line of waxed leather outerwear designed to keep sailors, fishermen and dockyard workers dry in even the worst weather.

A re-waxing service that began with Malcolm Barbour's vision 100 years ago remains an integral part of Barbour's sustainability strategy today. Wax for Life is at the heart of Barbour's ongoing commitment to minimise its impact on the environment for future generations.
