The Turkish chef Ebru Baybara has been proclaimed winner of the Basque Culinary World Prize 2023 for her contribution, through gastronomy, to cultural integration, her commitment to social development and biodiversity, and her involvement for two decades in initiatives that address the migratory crisis in the region, the revitalisation of soils in the face of climate change and even the humanitarian assistance demanded by tragedies such as the earthquake in Turkey.
In addition, the jury recognised the work of two other chefs by awarding special mentions to Nicole Pisani (United Kingdom), for revolutionising the way in which children are fed in schools, and to Heidi Bjerkan (Norway), for implementing multiple catering models based on the circular economy and a gastronomy committed to social reality.
The selection was carried out in Japan by the BCWP Jury made up of the members of the International Council of the Basque Culinary Center. The jury is chaired by chef Joan Roca and made up of some of the most influential chefs in the world.
This event is part of the Euskadi Japan 2023 year, a multi-sector initiative that aims to give visibility and intensify relations between the Basque Country and Japan and promote Euskadi Basque Country in Japan.
